Learning About Farm Equipment

Hello, my name is Arthur Sigmund. Welcome to my site about farm equipment. Growing up, all of the kids on the farm had to learn how to operate the tractors at an early age. We drove the tractors around to haul tools and equipment used to maintain the field. We also learned how to properly maintain and repair the tractors. As we grew older, our responsibilities extend to other equipment used on the property. I will use this site to explore farm equipment use, maintenance and repair techniques. I hope you will learn a lot from my site. Thank you for visiting.

What to Look For When Purchasing a New Riding Lawn Mower

Have you recently purchased a property that has a lot of grass to cut? If so, you're likely looking into getting a riding lawn mower to help you get this job done. Here are some things to consider when you start the shopping process.

1. Narrow Profile

Does your property have a gate that the lawn mower needs to fit through, or a door so that the lawn mower can fit into a garage or a shed? You'll likely be looking for a lawn mower that advertises a narrow profile. While the cutting width may not be as big as other riding lawn mowers, it may be the only solution that will work for your specific needs. Typically, a narrow profile lawn mower is only going to have one spinning blade underneath, while others will have two blades to give it the wider profile.

2. Automatic Transmission

Believe it or not, but riding lawn mowers come in models that have a manual and automatic transmission. An automatic transmission lawn mower is going to be easier to drive since you just push down on the pedal when you want to go faster and not think about shifting gears. A manual transmission is going to be a bit harder to use, but it is going to be more affordable with a lower purchase price.

3. Anti-Scalp Deck

Some riding lawn mowers come equipped with an anti-scalp deck. These look like wheels that are at the front of the lawn mower but don't touch the ground. The purpose is to prevent your deck of the lawn mower from coming in contact with the ground as you are going over uneven terrain. You'll really appreciate this feature if your land isn't perfectly flat and you have some bumps to go over.

4. Zero Turn Radius

Do you have a lot of trees or shrubs on your property that you are going to be cutting around? It may be worth getting a lawn mower that has a zero turn radius feature. This gives the lawn mower the ability to essentially spin in a circle with one wheel at an anchored position, giving you much better control over what parts of the lawn you are cutting. It can certainly save you time from having to go back to cut places that you missed.
